Introduction
I've been a fan of Newport News from before the time I even knew what the Internet was! However, thanks to their online store, I now regularly purchase cute clothing at fantastic prices.
COUPON CODES
Newport News uses Coupon Codes. Those two words are a must-have for the vocabulary of the online shopper. What you do is go to www.google.com and enter the words "coupon codes Newport News" (or whatever other online store you are using - I check EVERY SINGLE MERCHANT just in case) and up will pop many websites that do nothing but research coupon codes and list them for online shoppers.
My last order from Newport News, I found a coupon code for FREE shipping (handling was a small fee) AND a coupon code for 15% off my entire order! The ADORABLE sundress I bought was on clearance at $19.99, and this dress was such great quality that it made my previous purchase of a dress at J.Jill for $99.00 seem outrageously silly to me. ;)
Quality of Clothing
As I've just mentioned, I have found that the quality of merchandise at Newport News is competitive with snobbier merchants and SO MUCH MORE AFFORDABLE.
Selection of Clothing
Now to be perfectly honest, a good friend and I entertained ourselves for a solid hour looking at several Newport News Clearance Catalogs while listening to an outdoor jazz concert last month. Why? Because some of the clothing MUST be marketing to some kind of culture I don't understand - leopard print tight leggings, outrageous jumpsuits; stuff we laughed out loud at until my stomach cramped up. Big belts and slouchy off the shoulder sweaters - real 80's material, and I seriously believe that some of the clearance is INDEED still trying to get rid of merchandise from long ago.
BUT, in their regular catalog, which always migrates to clearance eventually (NEVER pay full-price - wait for clearance, which usually happens 3 month AFTER the first season's catalog is printed), there are really cute offerings and a wide variety of styles. I tend to like roses, lace, frilly crochet stuff and very traditionally feminine mainstream clothing, and I've been more than happy with the dresses I've found.
Did I mention SWIMWEAR?
Their annual swimsuit offerings are legendary, and I bought a really cute suit for $12.00. The scoop neck was actually PLUNGING, and it turns out I really wouldn't wear it in public, but hey - with just girlfriends it's no problem and makes me feel sexy!
I do NOT recommend the BodyShaper swimsuits. I bought a black one and it was so horrible - it was trying to "shape" my figure but I felt like I was entombed in polyester netting and didn't even want to get in the pool because the suit sagged badly under the weight of its own material.
Special Sizes - Tall, Women's, Petite
I want to quickly point out that Newport News does offer a variety of sizing options. I wasn't too impressed with their selection of Women's size clothing, but then again I was mainly looking for a nightgown to purchase as a present for a family member, and lingerie isn't really Newport News' emphasis.
Customer Service/Order Delivery
My orders have always arrived on time. I have returned merchandise and been promptly credited. And the clearance catalogs they slip into order boxes are really a bonus and fun to look at, not to mention you can find some amazingly good deals!
Clothing is sized very mainstream. I'm a size 12 and the sizes run true to the traditional department store definition of a "12" - not sure how they do that, but it's predictable, and I like that.
Ordering Process
Credit cards accepted are Newport News Credit Card (you can also apply online from the website), Spiegel Credit Card, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover/Novus.
You may also purchase and use Gift Certificates that come from Newport News.
It is recommended but NOT necessary to register and save your information and create an account. I personally find it's a lot easier and provides some good features such as links to all previous orders, tracking links, etc.
For $25.00 you can also join the "CLUB" and save 10% on every order for one year. I tried this one year and didn't think it was worth it.
My ONLY Pet Peeve
I'm trying to be balanced here, so I will mention the only pet peeve I have about Newport News, and that is their clearance section online. Personally I think it is confusing to the customer when you have 5 or so sections of clearance, "Going Soon," "Under $10" "Closeouts" etc.
Perhaps someone can enlighten me, but I like to just shop by category and call it all good.
Recommendation? TRY IT! YOU'LL LOVE IT!
